Shinola is a lifestyle brand selling watches, bicycles, leather goods, home goods, jewelry, and other luxury products. In 2011, the company was just setting up their headquarters and manufacturing facility in the Center of Creative Studies building in downtown Detroit.

Shinola partnered with the GLW team to create a few prototypes of loose fixtures and display cases. That work quickly transformed into full store rollouts. Working hand-in-hand with Shinola’s creative and talented design team, GLW helped build the Shinola brand over the course of years.

Throughout our long and successful partnership with Shinola, we have overcome a number of challenges. On one occasion, Shinola was displaying at the Baselworld Watch and Jewelry Show in Switzerland. The GLW team was asked to provide 18 display cases of various sizes for the show. The cases were UV-welded, ½-inch Starfire glass on quartersawn white oak bases, and lit with mini-LED pendant lights.

After creating the display cases, we needed a reliable way to transport them to Switzerland to ensure they would arrive on time and undamaged. We designed and engineered 2-way custom shipping crates, and we fabricated an extra set of UV-welded glass cubes for each display case in the event of shipping damage. Luckily, they were never needed–the cases made it from Detroit to Switzerland and back again intact.

Throughout our relationship with Shinola, we have been tasked with turning many complex design challenges into functioning realities. We have leveraged our creative problem-solving skills to help nurture the Shinola brand.
